Exactly what is a "Native Plant"? The term "native" has many meanings, but when speaking of plants, the tern "native plant" is commonly defined as a species of plant that has inhabited a particular region for thousands of years. It takes thousands of years for a species to co-evolve within a particular environment and to adapt to the environment. This is why a plant or species of plant is NOT considered "native" when it has been introduced within a particular region for a couple of hundred years.
WHY IS NATIVE HABITAT PRESERVATION IMPORTANT?
- The more rapid an enviromental change is, the more difficult it is for existing organisms to adapt and survive.
- The introduction of an organism (a new plant for instance) is change in itself. More important than the effect of the environment on the new plant is the effect that the new plant will have on the environment. A new plant species can affect the chemical composition of the soil, can attract animals and insects, and can more importantly cause other plant species to begin to die out.
- Many organisms depend upon specific plants for survival. These dependencies are often as much an indirect dependence as they are direct. For instance, a newly introduces species may become an "invasive species" by displacing other naturally occurring plants and vegetation. The organisms that depend upon the displaced plant then begin to experience a decreasing percentage of the available plant that it needs for survival.
- Many native plants are peculiar to a particular region. Many of these same native plants, especially in the Southeastern United States, are endangered or threatened. It is vital in these cases that extreme care be taken in preserving and restoring the native plant population in order to help propagate the species.
